Action for M.E.

Action for M.E. is the UK’s leading charity which raises funds to help improve the lives of people with M.E. 250,000 people in the UK have M.E. – this is more than the number of people affected with M.S., Motor Neurone Disease and Parkinson’s put together. Symptoms of M.E. are complex and variable – including severe muscle pain, memory loss, poor concentration and sensitivity to light and sound. For all people with M.E. there is an overwhelming feeling of extreme fatigue. This is no normal tiredness but can mean that a person feels unable to wash themselves or clean their teeth, and for many people M.E. means having to rely on a carer. 25% are house or bed bound. Action for M.E. provides emotional and practical support through our help-lines and comprehensive information through our publications and guides. We strive to transform the image of M.E. in the minds of the general public, to improve public services and the way in which people with M.E. are treated and to encourage scientific research to find the cause of the illness, better treatments and in the fullness of time a cure. Action for Neurological Disorders

Action for Neurological Disorders (A.N.D.) is a consortium of five charities which together provide care, counselling and research for patients with neurological disorders. The charities involved are the British Epilepsy Association, the Parkinson's Disease Society, The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, The National Society for Epilepsy and the Way Ahead. By supporting A.N.D. you will be helping people with Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease, motor neurone disease, stroke, epilepsy, brain tumours and head injury.

Over 7 million people in the UK suffer from arthritis and rheumatism including one child in every thousand. The objectives of the Arthritis Research Campaign are to raise money to fund research into the causes and cure of arthritis and rheumatism, to promote a better understanding of rheumatic diseases amongst patients, doctors and others concerned with patient care and to encourage the provision of better treatment for all who suffer from these painful and often crippling diseases which affect young and old alike.

The BHF is the nation's heart charity, raising funds for pioneering research that saves and improves the lives of vulnerable men, women and children. Since the 1960's, the BHF has been leading the way in heart research. Research breakthroughs, such as clot busting drugs, new pacemakers and replacement heart valves, keep thousands of hearts beating today.

The UK is currently experiencing an epidemic in people becoming diagnosed with diabetes and with at least 100,000 new cases per year; diabetes is one of the biggest health challenges of the 21st century.

As the leading national diabetes charity in the UK our role is not only to support people affected by diabetes and raise money to find a cure but to raise awareness of the seriousness of the risk factors and importance of prevention through lifestyle choices which includes eating a healthy balanced diet.

Fight for Sight

Fight for Sight is a leading charity which funds medical research into the prevention, treatment and cure of eye diseases in the UK. Established in 1965, Fight for Sight has been researching into glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, inherited eye diseases, including retinitis, pigmentosa. and amblyopia, a lethal condition causing eye deformities among babies developing in the womb.

As we fund over 170 excellent scientists across the UK, much has already been achieved – for example, one of our scientists has developed a test which detects glaucoma two or three years earlier than conventional methods, greatly increasing the likelihood of treatment being successful. However, much more is needed. Every hour, five people lose their sight. Every day, at least one child in the UK is born or becomes blind. This is a tragic and shocking statistic but one that Fight for Sight is working desperately hard to change, with your support through payroll giving.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) is the leading charitable funder and advocate of juvenile (type 1) diabetes research worldwide. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes strikes children suddenly and requires multiple injections of insulin daily and finger prick blood glucose tests several times a day. Insulin, however, is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation.

Muscular Dystrophy Campaign

Muscular Dystrophy and related muscle diseases are unforgiving, hard to understand and difficult to combat. More than 70,000 people in the UK have muscle disease and 350,000 people are indirectly affected as relatives and carers. There are no cures or treatments that prevent the breakdown of muscle, but increased knowledge has improved the quality, and in many cases the length, of people’s lives.

The Muscular Dystrophy Campaign is the only national charity focusing on all muscle diseases. We invest £3 million a year into care support services, research, muscle centres, networks, information and resources.

We have pioneered the search for treatments and cures for over 50 years and provide practical, medical and emotional support to people affected.

Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability

Many lives are touched by neuro-disability. Most of us know somebody who has suffered damage to their brain or nervous system. Common causes are traffic accidents and illnesses, such as multiple sclerosis or Huntington's disease. Often the victims are young people, with much unfulfilled potential and long years of happy life seemingly cut short.

The Royal Hospital for Neuro-disability specialises in treating the most serious of these. Our experienced and expert staff ensure that each person is given the best available care. With hard work and patience, people with neuro-disability are given the chance to lead more independent lives. Every year in the UK over 1,000 people experience a spinal cord injury, and there are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK alone. Most spinal cord injuries result in paralysis, and the impact of an injury can turn lives upside down.

UCL Hospitals Charitable Foundation

UCL Hospitals Charitable Foundation is a charity that primarily supports projects within the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The charity supports the funding of equipment, buildings and research.

The current main focus of fundraising is the Cancer Centre Appeal. UCL Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the country's largest NHS trusts and takes a leading role in national and international trials of treatments for cancers. This has enabled the trust to remain at the forefront of cancer care and to build on its international reputation.

In addition, the charity supports other projects within the NHS Trust, which have included: a new multimedia information centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the Royal London Homoeopathic Hospital, research into Sarcoidosis /CFA, research into the early detection and treatment of lung cancer and support of the Foetal Medicine Unit and the Young People’s Unit.
