PDSA
The mission of PDSA is to care for the pets of needy people by providing free veterinary services to their sick and injured animals and promoting responsible pet ownership.
PDSA exists to help sick and injured pets whose owners can not afford their treatment. PDSA is Britain’s leading veterinary charity, and this year PDSA will provide more than 1.8 million free treatments to sick and injured pets and more than 200,000 preventive treatments. This year, our PetAid services will cost more than £48 million.
PDSA does not receive any funding from the government, so our work treating sick and injured pets is entirely dependent upon donations and regular giving from the caring public. The average cost to PDSA of one course of treatment for a sick or injured pet is £143, although the actual cost of many treatments is far in excess of this figure. As you can see, support from the public is vital for us to be able to carry on providing the level of care and support pets need.

VETAID, a charity working for reduction in poverty and increase in food security for people in sub-Saharan Africa who are dependent on livestock.
Each year, VETAID improves the lives of over a million people. We currently work in Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya and Somalia. The main beneficiaries of the projects are herders, farmers, women’s groups, people living with HIV/AIDS and other vulnerable groups. VETAID works with these communities to secure food sources and reduce poverty through a range of actions such as:
- Providing animal health training and vaccinations
- Training in reliable crop production in drought-affected areas
- Distributing and restocking livestock
- Promoting land rights
- Improving access to water for domestic and agricultural purposes
- Supporting income generation activities like beadwork and dairy produce
- Training local organisations and government staff
- Empowering communities to influence decisions which affect their lives
VETAID is also aware that the choices made by people in the UK can make an impact globally. To address this, we provide school workshops and public presentations raising awareness of livestock and development issues.
